Today I am excited to announce that HerShare is officially live. I know what you are thinking, what is HerShare?
HerShare is a global angel investing network focused on closing the femtech investment gap. We are on a mission to help every woman get her share by connecting angels and founders with a passion for femtech.
The Problem
Femtech opportunities are undervalued and underinvested in due to a lack of diversity at the investment table
One of the biggest challenges facing the femtech industry is that the average venture capitalist (VC) often doesn't see the market opportunity that is femtech. It may come as no surprise that the sector is overwhelmingly dominated by men. While female representation is increasing, women* make up roughly 13 and 15 percent of partners at American and Canadian venture firms, respectively. While 77% of VC dollars go to companies with white founders, less than 10% of VC dollars go to female founders and less than 1% go to Black founders.
It is safe to say that we have a diversity problem in venture capital.
This is not just a matter of equity, it represents a huge risk to the industry with investors potentially missing out on opportunities that may not resonate with their worldview.
For founders in the femtech industry this has led to real challenges in raising capital. Every femtech founder has a story of being told their market is niche, their solution is weak, or overall business model lacks defensibility. While in some cases this may be true, a whole industry that services 50% of the world’s population cannot be totally uninvestable. The sad reality is that there are just not enough women* at the table who can champion innovative solutions through investment committees.
So whether as investors, founders or future users of femtech products women* continue to lose out.
The Motivation for HerShare
Femtech founders are too often dependant on male investors, yet the future of wealth is female
HerShare was born from my own struggles to find investors for the great products and visionary founders I was interacting with. Around me, I found myself and fellow femtech enthusiasts unable to angel invest because the ticket sizes were too large or the networks too exclusive. I kept asking myself (and let’s be honest everyone around me) why are we so dependant on a system that will never see the potential of a $1.1 trillion industry and that continues to make a small group of elite individuals richer?
Female wealth is growing exponenitally with rising incomes , and the transfer of wealth through inheritance. In fact, women* are estimated to inherit $30 trillion in assets over the next 5 to 10 years ! With evidence demonstrating that women* are more likely to be values aligned-investors , there is a totally untapped base of femtech investors in our communities, offices, and even homes.
HerShare is built on the notion that women’s* financial and consumer capital matters. And it’s time to start building products and services that let us invest in the people, places and things that matter to us.
At HerShare have three goals in mind:
Lower the barriers into angel investing for the everyday woman* so she can generate her own financial wealth by investing in the opportunities that align with her values.
Increase access to capital for femtech founders and women-centered businesses from investors who not only understand their market, but are likely to be the first adopters of their products.
Expand access to a plethora of innovative health solutions that could truly revolutionise the health outcomes of women* and girls everywhere.
We want to start a feminist financial revolution where all women* can get her share.
I truly believe that this is how we close the gender gap. Women* backing women* who serve women*. The hope is that HerShare grows into a movement of femtech investors, innovators and enthusiasts who are all able to thrive as result of more investment and innovation.
